James I. Bang is a partner in the Los Angeles office and practices in the areas of general and complex civil litigation. He is an experienced litigator in the areas of commercial, employment, real estate, trademark, copyright and construction disputes. He represents business entities in heavy industry and construction, chemical, air transportation, mass and information media, information technology, apparel, tire, travel luggage manufacturing and distribution, electronic game development, entertainment, food processing and distribution, telecommunications, finance and investment, energy, and banking, as well as foreign government agencies and high profile individuals.

Mr. Bang has well over 30 years of experience in litigation and trial management of intellectual property matters (trademark, copyright and patent), a broad range of contractual disputes and business torts including unfair competition claims, and employment disputes before state and federal courts. His employment law experience includes successfully defending class actions and handling private attorney general actions. His commercial and business tort experience includes successfully defending a multi-million dollar federal lawsuit brought against the Iraq Grain Board.

Mr. Bang has represented real estate developers, real estate brokers, property management companies, general contractors, and subcontractors in real estate and construction disputes in litigation and alternative dispute resolution forums. After a protracted mediation, Mr. Bang successfully obtained a seven-digit settlement on behalf of a client against one of the largest international construction companies in claims relating to a U.S. power plant project.

Mr. Bang has devoted significant time to transactional and compliance matters, including formation and establishment of various corporations and limited liability companies, negotiating and drafting license agreements, distribution agreements, lease agreements, and developing corporate structures. He has also advised his clients in complying with the rules and regulations of United States Department of Transportation, Federal Aviation Administration, United States Customs and Border Protection, and other governmental agencies. He negotiated and drafted the Agreement between the Korean Peninsula Energy Development Organization and the Government of Democratic People’s Republic of Korea on Supply of Light Water Reactors.

Immediately prior to joining the firm, Mr. Bang served as Senior Director of Legal Affairs and Operations (the equivalent of General Counsel) at Cha Health Systems, Inc., where he negotiated, drafted and advised on various contracts, consulted and supported the human resources team regarding employment law issues, liaised with outside counsel in formulating litigation strategy, assisted top executives in establishing business plans and company policies, and handled corporate governance issues. This in-house experience has provided Mr. Bang with a unique perspective in managing transactional, regulatory and litigation matters in a cost-effective and client-friendly manner.

Mr. Bang is frequently invited as a lecturer and commentator. He has lectured at Pepperdine University School of Law, University of California at Los Angeles Extension, KAIST, State University of New York, Korea, Konkuk University, Korea Trade Investment Promotion Agency, and Korean Investors and Traders Association.

Mr. Bang provides pro bono services and actively promotes public interests.

Mr. Bang is admitted to practice before the courts of the State of California, the United States District Courts of California (Central District and Eastern District) and the United States Courts of Appeal for the Ninth Circuit
